The great nation of Australia is an ideal living environment for both humans and animals alike. While the country boasts an impressive array of wildlife, some of these can be quite invasive, taking up residence in your home unexpectedly. So that you know how to keep these unwanted visitors out, you should first learn about the various animal varieties that Australians can find in their households.

Flies

The most common pest in Australia, it can be difficult to completely eliminate the fly from your household. You should do your best to prevent these insects from taking up residence in your home though as they can spread diseases like hepatitis A, salmonellosis, shigellosis and trachoma if left to breed unchecked. The good news is that there are many ways to eliminate flies and ensure your household is healthy. Cover your food, dispose of rubbish in a secure manner, and make sure your toilet is working properly. If you have a septic tank, ensure it isn’t damaged. Also dispose of animal faeces as soon as you can.

Mosquitos

During the hotter months, Australia becomes home to a great many mosquitos especially if you live in wetter areas or along the coast. Since they bite both humans and animals, mosquitos can transmit the following diseases:

  • Ross River virus
  • Murray Valley encephalitis
  • Barmah Forest virus
  • Kunjin virus
  • Dengue fever

To control mosquitos, simply eliminate wet environments where they like to breed. Stop water from pooling in containers, tyres, jars, etc. If you have a pond or lake nearby, introduce some fish so that they can eat the mosquito larvae before it has time to develop.

Rats & Mice

Inadvertently introduced by the British when they first arrived in Australia, the common rat and mouse can be a problem in certain households, especially if they set up a nest there. They are prevalent in urban areas and can come in three varieties:

  • Ground rat
  • Climbing rat
  • House mouse

Again, this is another pest which can spread disease so it is best to get rid of them as soon as possible. Practising good hygiene will help eliminate the risks of future infestations as you will get rid of any food sources that may attract them. On the other hand, those with rodent problems should find pest control in Sydney or whichever Australian city they are in. These specialists will help come in and flush out the unwanted critters, while giving you advice on how to keep them out forever.

Cockroaches

Australia has several kinds of cockroaches, some native, some introduced. The most common pest is the German Cockroach which grows to around 13 mm long and which cannot fly. These are typically found in interior environments which aren’t so clean. There is also the Australian Cockroach which grows to about 30 mm and which is brown in colour. These can fly and are mostly found outdoors.

These pests can also spread disease due to their tendency to live in filthy places. After they walk over the unsanitary surface, they can then come and spread viruses and bacteria within your household. You should ensure your food containers have tight fitting lids, seal off any cracks in the walls and floor, store all kitchen gear and utensils off the floor, and wipe excess food particles off shelves on a regular basis.

Fleas

The last pest on this list of common Australian household nuisances is the common flea. Fleas will bite both humans and animals so they can feed and breed. They are generally fond of sandy environments too and can be inadvertently brought home from the beach. If you aren’t careful, you can also find fleas on your:

  • Bedding
  • Pets
  • Clothing

It is important to wash your dogs and cats with anti-flea shampoo to make sure they don’t get an infestation in their fur. If you do end up with a flea problem in your home, it is important to call the pest control professionals so they can deal with these unwanted visitors in a safe, efficient manner.

These are just some of the pests you may find within your Australian household. Remember to follow the above tips and you should decrease the chances of them taking up residence within your home.
