Whether it’s for medical or esthetical reasons, facelifts, no matter how small or insignificant, come with a relatively strict recovery guidelines that will enable you to get the best results from your surgery. Here are some of the most important things that you should know about the recovery process and how to best deal with it.

You Will Need Help

One of the most important things that you should know is that you will need somebody to stay with you for 24 hours or more depending on the range of medical procedures that were undertaken during the facelift operation. In some cases you may have to stay in the hospital for a day or two in case of a more significant facelift operation. In most cases you will be able to go home immediately after the operation but you will need help. You can’t drive and you will have to be monitored by somebody for the next 24 hours as emergency and complications, no matter how rare, can occur in some cases.

Regardless of how small the operation is, you will have to deal with some swelling and this is perfectly normal. Swelling around the eyelids, neck and in some rare cases, chest is normal. You can use ice to reduce the swelling and pain at the same time. What you need to achieve with ice is the reduced blood flow that, consequently, reduces the swellings and calms down the nerves.Always make sure that there is a bit of water between your skin and the ice and don’t overdo it. A cloth wrapped around the ice pack will work just fine, as well. It is important not to have ice directly on your skin as that can damage it. Pain

While facelift surgery pain is a normal thing that affects everybody, you should not expect anything major. If you start experiencing extensive pain with excessive swelling that does not reduce in size or intensity, call your doctor immediately. In vast majority of the cases the pain will stop or lose its intensity after 2 to 3 days. Under no circumstances should you use ibuprofen or aspirin as these can cause extensive bleeding and negate the positive results of the surgery. Ice packs and cooling of your skin are some of the most effective and simplest ways to deal with pain. Acetaminophen in the form of Tylenol is usually what most people take. Celebrex can also be prescribed but in some cases it may be problematic for some people and Tylenol is generally all that you will need.

Limit Movement

One of the things that you really need to be aware of is that you can’t really do anything after the surgery and you should avoid any sort of activity for the first 24 hours after the surgery. For the next 6-7 days you should refrain from any sort of complex and tiresome physical work. Avoid any sort of work that requires flexing of the skin and muscles around the areas where you just had your facelift done as this can cause tearing and bleeding. Things like special elastic garment and neck collars are a common way to prevent too much movement and should be used.

Hygiene is important and you should be careful to keep your body as clean as possible after your surgical facelift operation. While hygiene is important you should not take any showers for the next 24 hours after the surgery. While showers are OK after that, you should not take baths, hot tubs until your skin is fully healed. You should avoid swimming as well and avoid using too much force when rubbing skin around surgical cuts and stitches. In some cases the use of surgical glue may mean that you will have to wait for a 7-9 days before it washes off.

While face lift surgery is nothing major and you shouldn’t expect any complications, you really should take some time off and follow the recovery guidelines that your doctor gives you. While any sort of major health complication is a really rare thing, things like small bleedings under your skin or tearing can cause swelling and additional problems which can have a negative effect on your skin. Resting and taking in all the nutrients that your body needs to heal is the best way to deal with recovery.
